The Margaret River Camp Review
The 3 day camp in Margaret River at the end of “Hell Month” was the reward offered to the PN & DN swimmers. It all started with the usual Monday morning three hour beating in the gym. Despite the sore muscles we remained in high spirits as we crammed ourselves and our luggage into the two minivans. Three hours later we arrived at camp and, before we could get comfy we were whisked away to the Margaret River pool for a training session.
As the sun rose over Australia day we were already exercising. A “forest run” turned into a forest marathon through the bush. That was just the warm up! Team building activities such as fitting your team through a spider’s web, getting a golf ball 20 metres through the bush using only half cut plastic pipes and creating a bridge out of wooden poles ensued. A bit of crawling and climbing through Giant’s Cave, snorkeling and surfing were thrown in, despite the latter being interrupted by a shark spotting. Lights out meant instant sleep that night.
The next morning, we were off to the playground. Don’t be fooled … this was no picnic. It was a circuit session; push ups on the swings, chin ups on the ropes and so on. A fun swim training session with the Margaret River squad was next followed by a final trip to the beach. And you guessed it there was time for more “activity”; just a quick dualathon comprising a massive 50m dune climb, followed by a killer swim in the surf and we had to do that not once, nor twice but three times!
We headed home exhausted, but had learned much about leadership and being part of a team as well as having got to know our team mates so much better. It was hard work, but so much fun, even with the bad singing (from Mikey!).
The swimmers would like to thank the amazing crew from Cape to Cape for planning such an exciting day filled with great activities on Australia Day.

Calling all Members that are Students at UWA
- If you are already or are about to become a registered student at UWA, please advise the club via email on communications@uwawestcoast.org. We need the data on the number of registered students in the club to fulfill the requirements of the University’s Department of Sport
- We also need existing students to assist with the club stand at the UWA orientation day on 26th February. Please advise your availability via email to communications@uwawestcoast.org
Vote for your Favourite Athlete
- The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is calling on sport fans to vote for their favourite athlete and team as part of its annual awards ceremony, the AIS Sport Performance Awards (ASPAs)
- The ASPAs - are a celebration of the nation’s sporting achievements and will see winners crowned in a number of categories including: male athlete; female athlete; Para-performance; and emerging athlete of the year
- The AIS urges all Australian sports fans to cast your vote and help choose Australia’s favourite team and personality for 2015. Voting has opened and closes 17th February

Calling all Creative Swimmers to Design our new Bathers
- UWA - West Coast needs its own identity
- We have received a number of great designs for the application of the club name. Feedback will be provided soon. We are in need of further input for the design of club bathers.
- The primary constraints on the bathers' design is that they must use the club colours blue, green and gold. If the university logo is used, it must not be defaced in any way. To help you work wit these constraints ,please refer to the logo design guidelines file
Club/Squad Only Memberships
- The Club only membership option is now available
- All former West coast squad only members can now become Club Only UWA - West Coast Swimmming Club members at a cost of $25 per swimmer plus $25 for a parent member. This entitles your swimmer to compete a 4 club nights per year and take part in all other club functions
- The Club Only option does not allow swimmers to compete at SWA sanctioned meets. For this, you need to take out a full, annual SWA membership
- Note that former West Coast squad only members will need to follow the New Member links as the former squad only membership has lapsed.
Volunteers Needed for Vacant Committee Positions
- We would like to fill the vacant positions (fundraising co-ordinator and social director) as soon as possible
- Any member interested in finding out more and possibly taking up one of these positions, is invited to email the committee via penny@westcoastswimclub.com.au or talk in person to any of the committee members listed above when you see them around at the pool
- With each of these roles, there is also scope to volunteer as a small group of friends to share the workload and make it more fun
Swimmers' distribution list for Pool Deck News
