Club News Update

Dear Members

Our vision for West Coast to be Australia’s leading swimming club appears within reach after an exciting month of competition with our swimmers shining brightly at recent State Junior and National Age championships.

The Club’s athletes vindicated Swimming Australia’s decision earlier this year to include West Coast as one of only 10 anointed Podium Performance Centre’s (PPC) around Australia. West Coast’s involvement in the Challenge Stadium PPC, partnered by the Western Australian Institute of Sport, will provide all of our budding young swimming champions and coaches with access to some of Australia’s best coaching and support services. It is Swimming Australia’s stated ambition for Australia to regain the mantle as the world’s leading swimming nation and with the talent we have emerging through all of our ranks we are confident that West Coast will be a part of that journey.

The Club’s recent achievements at Junior and Age level championships have not gone unnoticed with Swimming Australia CEO Mark Anderson visiting Challenge Stadium last week to meet with our PPC program leaders and to see first-hand some of our swimmers in their daily training environment.

There has also been a lot going on behind the scenes at your Club to ensure that our Children will continue to be provided with the best possible opportunities, regardless of which squad they swim in and what level of commitment they make to the sport of swimming. The Board has had to assess the growing day-to-day demands of running the Club’s business and the financial constraints we face in an extremely challenging environment of rising costs at Challenge Stadium. As a non-for-profit organization our Club relies very heavily on squad fee income, which makes it very important that we work hard to retain swimmers at all levels of the Club. It is very clear that we need to find other ways to generate income to ensure the Club can continue to deliver high level coaching and venue services to our members at Challenge Stadium. Stepping up our fundraising and sponsorship efforts is one area where our members can provide some creative input, so feel free to direct any ideas to Board member Evan Papantoniou who is responsible for the Club’s member/volunteer activities.

The Board will soon be announcing plans to develop and implement a new strategic plan that will map out the future needs of our Club. This process will utilize the expertise of a Swimming Australia representative to kick-start the process and ensure that the Club engages as wide a variety of stakeholders as possible in this important strategic planning process.

At a Club management level, the Board is also pleased to announce a couple of new appointments to our management team. Penny Taylor has accepted a position on the Board and will assume responsibility for our communication requirements and will be reaching out to all members in due course to elicit input to help design new processes of internal communication that will benefit all of us and augment the strategic plan that we are building so that we may achieve our vision together.  I urge all members to contribute to this process.  It is your club and we value your thoughts on how the club moves forward.

We are also excited that Diana Holt has been working quietly behind the scenes for a few weeks as the Club’s Administrator Officer with a broad range of responsibilities including but not limited to accounts, invoices, salaries & payroll across all of the Club’s activities. Diana’s expertise in the area of accounting and corporate compliance will add greatly to the administrative requirements of the Club.

Please read on to find out more about what’s going on at your club in the lead-up to the short course season, including a summary of some of the outstanding performances by West Coast over the past month or so:

Important Coaching Developments:

Recent news that coaches Tim Lane and Kristin Cihoski are leaving the Club to return to the USA has left two very important coaching positions to fill. Both coaches have made significant contributions to the growth and success of West Coast over the past two seasons. Tim has led our national age program since July 2012 and Kristin has worked with the Junior Performance squad and assisted with administration for the past 12 months.

The Club has moved quickly to provide stability to both the National Age Performance and Junior squads, which represent very important book-ends to the Club’s future.

National Age Performance squad:

The Board is pleased to announce that Greg Hodge has been appointed to lead the Club’s coaching program as National Age Performance coach. This appointment is on an interim basis and will provide the NAP squad with the highest possible standard of coaching whilst the Club considers longer-term coaching options. The recent performances of our swimmers at junior and age levels mean that West Coast has never been better positioned to add further quality to what is already an outstanding group of coaches.

Greg Hodge’s credentials speak for themselves and the Club is very fortunate to have secured his services, particularly in view of his understanding of the importance of West Coast’s role in the Podium Performance Centre at Challenge Stadium. Just as important is his already well established link with West Coast dating back over several years. He previously served as national high performance director of Australian swimming and more recently (2009-2013) as the high performance manager of swimming at the Western Australian Institute of Sport. This provided Greg with an invaluable knowledge of the State’s leading age swimmers, including many of our current NAP squad members.

Ironically, during his time at WAIS, Greg also contributed his vast swimming knowledge to the process that helped convince our Club to establish its own squad business rather than outsourcing coaching services, as was the case prior to the 2010-11 season. A number of our members will already be familiar with Greg through some of the informative “introduction to swimming” presentations he has given to our parents in recent years.

Greg’s appointment is effective from the 1st of June, but he will spend the next few weeks on pool deck working alongside outgoing coach Tim Lane as part of an orderly handover of responsibilities.

Junior Squad Coaching Appointment:

Good progress has been made with coach interviews for the junior squad positions, which are to be vacated by Kristin Cihoski later this month.

Parents of junior swimmers should feel confident in the knowledge that there are some excellent coaching resources already available inside the Club which will ensure a quality service is maintained until we appoint a new junior coach, hopefully before the start of the Short Course season in a few weeks time.

Christian ‘CJ’ Jongsma currently coaches the Junior Bronze squad and has generously agreed to step in and provide the continuity of a reassuring and familiar face to our youngest swimmers while we cast our net statewide in the search for a new coach. He will be supported by other members of the current coaching group during this transition.

For those that don’t know CJ, he has been an instrumental part of the growth and success of the Club over nearly 30 years and offers a wealth of knowledge and experience on pool deck and enjoys seeing swimmers progress to the highest level. CJ has coached swimmers to both State and National level and is well known for the importance he places on technique, the quality feedback that he provides to swimmers and his encouragement of all swimmers to train to their full potential.

The Board will provide more news on coaching appointments as they are finalised in the coming weeks.

State Junior LC Championships:

Fifty of our youngest competitive swimmers set the early standard at the ‘State Junior LC Championships’ recording 211 personal best times and collecting an astounding 71 individual and relay medals.

The collective effort over three days of competition contributed to West Coast winning the combined Club Point Score with a total of 920.5 points, which was more than 250 points ahead of our nearest rivals Breakers (663) and Arena (642).

The Junior LC Championships ended on a high note for two of our youngsters who were honored as the “Male” and “Female” swimmers of the meet. Joshua Edwards-Smith broke four state records amongst a 9-medal haul in 10-years age group. 9-year-old Kate Harrison was the champion girl courtesy of 11 medals, including 8 Gold and a State Record in the 50m butterfly.

The Club’s depth was further highlighted when the Boys’ 11-12 year-old Relay Team broke two separate State records. The quartet of Joel Hill, Kent Nguyen, Malachi Faamausili Fala and Thomas Lawson smashed more than four seconds off the previous 200m medley record of 2:14.51 to clock 2:10.08. They then teamed up to set a new mark and broke their own 200m freestyle record clocking 1:55.03 to better their previous year’s mark of 1:57.30.

Congratulations to all of our junior swimmers and their families for representing the Club with distinction both in and out of the pool.

The attached table shows how our medal winners performed.

National Age Championships:

West Coast can also proudly boast about the achievements of our swimmers at the recent National Age Championships in Sydney. Our swimmers exceeded all expectations by finishing fourth overall in the Club standings, just four points behind last year’s leading club and respected rival Melbourne VicCentre and one spot ahead of last year’s second place-getter Nunawading.

Having 30 West Coast swimmers meet the required qualifying standard to earn the right to compete at the National Age Championships in Sydney is an achievement in itself. Beyond that was a remarkable feat with 36 individual final appearances delivering 13 medals (6 Gold, 6 Silver & 1 Bronze). A highlight for the dedicated West Coast support group came in the form of two relay medals (a Gold and a Silver) for the 16& Under boys and a couple of very creditable near misses from our 16& Under girls who finished fourth in both the 200m Freestyle and Medley relays.

15-year-old Tamsin Cook dominated the girls 400m freestyle final to win gold in an All-Comers record of 4:09.29 – a time that almost broke Olympian Hayley Lewis' 24-year-old age group record (4:08.89). Tamsin ended up with a five medal haul including another gold medal in the 200m fly, two silver medals in the 100m & 200m freestyles and a bronze in the 100m fly.

Damian Fyfe also made a splash collecting four medals including 2 gold (200 fly & 400 free) and two silver (100 & 200 free).

Damian also spearheaded the West Coast relay team to a new Australian record in the boys’ 16 and under 4x100m medley relay.  The team, which also comprised Alex Milligan, Alex Chin and Braga Verhage, touched the wall in 3:50.49 ahead of TSS Aquatics (3:53.8) and Trinity Grammar (3:54.43).

Later in the week Damian, Alex Chin and Braga teamed up with Alex Freeman to win a silver medal in the boys' 16 and under 4x100m freestyle relay in 3:30.88, finishing behind St Peters Western whose time 3:29.38 was a new Australian age group record.

Two precious Gold medals went to Alex Milligan in the 100m & 200m breaststroke. It was a double well earned and both wins raised the roof with some very excited supporters on both sides of the stadium.

Emma Hargrave won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle also made finals 50 free and 200IM.

Hadley Lindsay collected a silver medal in the 50m freestyle and had a terrific meet swimming in another four finals (100 free, 200 free, 100 back & 200IM).

Another 11 swimmers made finals. They included Braga Verhage (50 free, 100 free & 100 back), Andrea Ho (100 back & 200 back), Anna Murray (400IM, 400 free & 800 free), Taj Jones (200 back), Alex Chin (50 free), Shelby Carstens (200 breast), Haden Wimbridge-Glassford (100 fly), Alex Freeman (1500m free), Sian Munks (200 free, 400 free & 200 back) and Jessica Cannon (100 back).

National Age Multi-Class Championships

Multi-class swimmers also wrapped up a great week of swimming for West Coast in Sydney at the 2014 National Age Championships.

18-year-old Dylan Broadway had an impressive campaign taking a bronze in the boys’ 17-18 years 50m backstroke in 44.07. He also took almost two seconds off his personal best time to finish fifth in the 50m freestyle, touching the wall in 33.98 and was sixth in the 100m freestyle in 1:19.65.

Max Prinz also clocked a personal best in the boys’ 15-16 years 100m freestyle (1:36.88) and Madi Brown got her first taste of national competition in the 50m freestyle.

International Recognition:

Congratulations to three West Coast swimmers who have achieved international recognition over the past month with selection on Australian teams. The trio of Jessica Pengelly, Damian Fyfe and Tamsin Cook all train with coach Michael Palfery in the Podium Performance Centre (‘PPC’) high performance squad at Challenge Stadium.

Jessica swam her way onto the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow in July. She booked her seat on the plane with an outstanding medal swim in the final of the 400m Individual Medley at last month’s Australian Open Championships in Brisbane.

Well done also to National Age champions Damian Fyfe and Tamsin Cook who will both don the green and gold as part of a 16-swimmer Australian team to compete at the Oceania Championships later this month in Auckland, New Zealand.

Damian & Tamsin are also off to Hawaii in August with the Australian Junior Pan Pacs team and will be joined by the Challenge Stadium Podium Performance Centre head coach Michael Palfery.

The following West Coast members have been nominated or are in contention for an award at the Swimming WA ‘2014 Swimmer of the Year Awards’. If you can’t figure that out, then take a look at the timetable published on our website or give either Josephine or Nina a call.

First Qualifying Meet of the SC Season:

Swimming WA has reintroduced online entries for its swim meets, which means that members should be registering for the first SWA SC Qualifying Meet of the new season which is to be held on Saturday the 31st of May to the 2nd of June. Entries for this meet close at 9:30pm on Tuesday the 20th of May and can be done via the link at http://wa.swimming.org.au/article.php?group_id=1170.

All West Coast swimmers should consult with their coach straight away to see if they should be targeting this meet and what events they should be entering.

Swimming WA has enlisted the help of local provider Biz Anyware, founder of My Swim Results, to provide a simple and easy on-line entry process. Using the online entry system is quick and doesn’t require a personal username and password to login for entry. For your guide to online entries visit http://wa.swimming.org.au/visageimages/Miscellaneous/Guide_to_My_Swim_Results_Online_Entries.pdf.

Junior Swimmers target Albany Short Course Carnival

The long trek to the Great Southern Region has become an annual pilgramage for many West Coast families who have enjoyed the atmosphere and comraderie of a weekend of competition and socialising at the Albany Short Course Carnival. We hope as many members as possible will be able to make the trip.

It’s the perfect meet for our junior swimmers to secure qualifying times, Warm-ups and racing doesn’t start until Noon on the Saturday, which gives many families the option of driving down at their leisure on a Friday night or early Saturday morning. This is a very popular meet as it is held on July 5 & 6 and coincides with the first weekend of the school holidays and gives many families the option of extending their stay in the region without having to rush home after the meet ends early on Sunday afternoon.

Information about the meet can be found on the Swimming WA website at  http://wa.swimming.org.au/%20http:/wa.swimming.org.au/article.php?group_id=1146. Don’t forget to secure your accommodation nice and early. Club members traditionally stay at Banksia Gardens Motel, which is only a short walk from the pool and provides the perfect environment for social interaction outside competition time. Feel free to visit http://banksiagardens.com.au/ for more information and to book your accommodation.

Looking for a Home:

Are there any friendly West Coast families out there willing and able to billet a swimmer for the next three months? If need be, we can get creative and do it in four-week blocks, if that is more convenient for a family or families that live fairly close to Challenge Stadium?

17-year-old Zac Incerti wants to get serious about his swimming and has accepted an opportunity to be part of the PPC pathway at Challenge Stadium. He has lived in Broome from the age of 3 and schooled at Aquinas College as a boarder from Yr 8 to 12, graduating last year. He was identified and invited to swim with the Michael Palfery’s high performance squad at WAIS after the State Country meet in January this year. Zac also travelled with the West Coast team to National Age Championships in Sydney last month and fitted in very well with all of our team representatives.

The accommodation is required until August, at which time he will have his driver’s license and move in with his grandparents in Bassendean.  His parents Stephen & Christie are keen to speak any interested families who may be able to offer some assistance.

Please let Steve Hill know if you can help!

In closing I would like to remind all members that the Board and committees of West Coast Swimming Club past and present have been made up of parents who have made a significant commitment to the culture and success of our Club. The Club’s current Board members are all proud parents of junior and age swimmers and we look forward to working closely with the coaching group and parents for the benefit of everyone at West Coast.

Yours sincerely on behalf of the Board,

STEVE HILL
